KUCHING : Sarawak Dayak Graduates’ Association (SDGA) said this year it would focus on strategies to raise fund to strengthen its financial position apart from recruiting new members.

Its president Dr Dusit Jaul said he supported the association’s activities involving education, skills training and career development of SDGA members and that of the Dayak community.

The SDGA is targetting  to raise up to RM100,000 apart from recruiting around 1,000 members in 2009 alone., he said. Dr Dusit said the two programmes are also in line with the nation’s policy of human capital development.

"We have to hold such programmes this year as these are part of our efforts to ensure that SDGA grows," he said during SDGA book presentation event recently. The books were presented to its working committee. Dr Dusti said first and foremost, the committee members must be committed in implementing the strategies for the good of SDGA.

He said he acknowledged that SDGA has recorded some successes in the past. He hoped all the programmes set for 2009 would run smoothly and that members must work hard to ensure that SDGA is indeed active. Among the yearly programmes is ‘Frame Development 2009-2020′ and also one that is related to personal development and motivation as well as financial literacy for the benefit of members and Dayak students and school leavers alike.

The dates for these programmes are yet to be decided, he said.

KUCHING: Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association was yesterday urged to make itself relevant to the community and attract more Dayak graduates to become its members.

Minister of Social Development and Urbanisation Dato Sri William Mawan, who gave this advice, said the association must plan its activities well and implement those activities effectively. He said this when the committee members made a courtesy call on him on Monday, where their president Dr Dusit Jaul briefed the minister on their future direction, which is divided into three-phase growth.

The first phase (2009-2010) is for institutional strengthening, second, (2011-2015) for institutional growth, and third (2016-2020) for institutional maturity. Programmes and activities to be carried out by the association will be aligned with this from framework development.

Dusit emphasised that their immediate programme was targeted at students sitting for public examinations (PMR, SPM, STPM). The programme’s deliverables cover three core areas; motivation, finance for higher education, and career development. This year’s programmes cover all the major towns in Sarawak.

They were led by their President, Dr Dusit Jaul.

"This is the first of a series of visits to State and Federal leaders for this year. Our objective is to explain the objectives and plans of the association," said Dusit in his presentation to Mawan.

According to Dusit, SDGA comprises Dayak professionals who aim to promote good and relevant education among the Dayak people.

"The current committee is two months old and we have clearly identified the activities for this year," he said.

They include the "Ngemansang Nembiak Sekula’ programme that focuses on students who are sitting for public examinations such as PMR, SPM and STPM, career expos, social and sports activities as well as community work.

453 Members

The association currently has 453 members. It hopes to have 1000 members by the end of this year.

Mawan said he was prepared to lend his support to the association but advised the committee members to attract more members.

"There are thousands of Dayak graduates and you have to recruit more to reflect or represent the Dayak communities.

"You must have relevant activities that appeal to them. People can join the association by the thousands the following year.

"Sustaining the numbers is important and to do this, the association needs to provide them, this pool of qualified people, with the platform for mainstream networking and such," added Mawan.
