Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association (SDGA) took the initiative to organise the above

seminar on 15 October 2011 at Bilik Kuliah, Dewan Suarah Kota Samarahan. The seminar,

first of its kind for Kuching and Kota Samarahan was attended by 170 SPM students from

six secondary schools in Kuching and Kota Samarahan Division namely, SMK Balai Ringin,

SMK Serian, SMK Kota Samarahan, SMK Muara Tuang, SMK Tabuan Jaya and SMK Tebakang.

The main objective of having the one day seminar is to get students to be well prepared to

face the SPM examination. In line with this, three papers were presented;

i) English Language Questioning and Answering Techniques by Mr. Gepat Ak. Gadip

ii) Sejarah Questioning and Answering Techniques by Mr. Slyvestor Michael Mijel

In his speech to the participating audiences comprising students who will be sitting for their

SPM exam soon, Dr. Dusit Jaul, the association’s President wants students to take full

responsibility for their future. Teachers and parents could do so much, but it will be the

students themselves who will be sitting in the classroom for their exam, comes examination

day.

Dr. Dusit reminded students attending the seminar that as students, their task is to study.

In this critical period, run-up to the exam, they should not be distracted by other on-goings.

Their mindset should focus on achievement of academic excellence.

SDGA achieved yet another milestone with the formation of Sri Aman Division Liaison

Committee (DLC) on the 08 October 2011. A meeting to formalise the formation of Sri Aman

DLC was chaired by the association’s President, Dr. Dusit Jaul and attended by twenty four

participants.  Among those who attended the meeting were Cikgu Jamit Ajok (Pegawai

Pelajaran Daerah Sri Aman) and Cikgu Baba Minggu (Pegawai Pelajaran Daerah Lubok Antu).

SDGA’s Deputy President, Mdm. Noelle Lily Morse and its Treasurer General,Mr Tamoi Janggu

were also present.

The Sri Aman DLC is headed by Cikgu Francis Berayan, with Cikgu Marry Terrance Embol as

Secretary. The other committee members are Cikgu Jamit Ajok, Cikgu Baba Minggu, Cikgu

Dickson Palot Anak Melintan, Cikgu Joni Colin Singet and Cikgu Diana Denis Andrew.

The immediate goals spelt out to Sri Aman DLC is membership drive for which the target set

is to recruit 350 new members by the end of this year; with 200 members from Sri Aman and

150 members from Lubok Antu. The newly appointed Sri Aman DLC is confident and gave

assurance that this figure can be achieved based on the estimated number of graduates in

Sri Aman Division.

Earlier on in his opening remark, Dr. Dusit emphasised the need for Dayak intellectuals

to work together as a solid team promoting the value of education among the Dayak

community.  This is more so when Dayak achievement in education thus far is nothing to

be proud of compared to the other communities. In this context, Dayak graduates, wherever

they may be and regardless of whatever positions held, should become willing players to be

in the forefront leading their communities into the 21st century.

We should discard the prevailing temptation of self centrismto one that is community centric.

The progress of the Dayak community in education is a collective responsibility especially on

the part of Dayak graduates.  In a way, it is payback time for us; giving back to our community

for the positions we hold today in society.

The formation of Sri Aman DLC is the first among the DLC to be set up in the various Divisions

and Dayak graduates in Sri Aman should be proud of this achievement.

The Guest of Honour was YB Tan Sri William Mawan Anak Ikom, Minister of Social Development and Urbanization. Other VIPs in attendance were YB Datuk Dr. Stephen Rundi, Assistant Minister of Public Utilities and Public Health,  Hajjah Nancy Hj Shukri and YB Mr Ali Biju.

The dinner was significant in that it marked the association had come of age. To commemorate this occasion, two programs were initiated and launched. The first was the setting up of SDGA’s Higher Education Relief Fund, and second, the official inauguration of the association’s Women Affairs Committee. The association highly appreciate the support given by all quarters (individuals, associations and companies) that have contributed towards the success of the 10th year Anniversary Dinner.

Kuching, Tun Jugah Foundation: Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association EXCO members led by its President, Dr. Dusit Jaul, paid a courtesy call to Tan Sri Linggi recently. According to press statement issued by the association, the purpose of the visit is to convey the association’s heartfelt congratulations to Tan Sri Linggi on being awarded the Panglima Setia Mahkota (which carries the title “Tan Sri”) by his Majesty the Yang Di Pertuan Agong. The visit was also to formally invite Tan Sri Linggi to attend SDGA’s 10th Year Anniversary Dinner to be held on 30th July 2011.

During the visit, Dr. Dusit briefed Tan Sri Linggi, a well known Dayak corporate figure, on some of the association’s upcoming programs for this year. Tan Sri Linggi, one of the main catalysts behind the formation of SDGA in 2001 advised the association to harness the intellectual asset of the Dayak, reiterating that in this competitive modern day world, brain power, not so much muscle power, will make the difference. We have to move in tandem with the development agenda of the government. On this matter, Tan Sri Linggi shared his thought that economic empowerment and human capital development of the Dayak community is something that need urgent attention.
