Venue: Borneo Cultures Museum Auditorium

The Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association (SDGA) was invited to attend the Majlis Syarahan Utama Jaku Tangkai Mengandai organised by Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), joining Iban leaders, academics, cultural activists, students and community members in celebrating the richness of the Iban language and traditions.

The ceremony was officiated by Minister at the Premier’s Office, YB Dato Sri John Sikie anak Tayai, who underscored the fundamental role of language and culture in shaping identity. In his remarks, he reminded participants that without language there is no identity, and without culture there are no roots.

The keynote address by Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. Alfred Jabu anak Numpang resonated deeply with attendees, as he shared reflections on Iban values, philosophy and lived experiences that continue to shape Dayak identity. A particularly meaningful moment followed when his family presented his published works to the UPSI Library, symbolising the continuity of knowledge and the passing on of cultural wisdom to future generations.

The programme was further enlivened by traditional berpantun, berjawang and cultural performances, offering a vivid reminder of the vibrancy and living nature of Iban heritage.

From SDGA’s perspective, the gathering reaffirmed the importance of preserving and promoting Dayak languages, documenting and sharing heritage knowledge, and strengthening partnerships that keep culture alive across generations.

SDGA extends its appreciation to UPSI for hosting the meaningful platform and congratulates all parties involved in making the event a success, while reaffirming its commitment to initiatives that protect cultural roots and empower graduates and youth through heritage-based engagement.
