SDGA Supports MEITD’s Free Education Initiative for STEM Programmes

Tuesday, 8 July 2025

Venue: LCDA Tower

The Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association (SDGA) had the honour of paying a courtesy call to YB Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Sarawak, at LCDA Tower.

During the meeting, SDGA expressed its strong support for the ministry’s initiative on free education for STEM programmes, which has been officially mandated through a ministry circular. Beginning in 2026, the initiative will be implemented at Swinburne University pf Technology Sarawak, Curtin University Malaysia, University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), and i-CATS University College, opening wider and more inclusive opportunities for students across Sarawak.

The discussion also centred on empowering more Dayak graduates in STEM-related fields, with an emphasis on combining academic excellence with practical skills development. YB Dato Sri emphasised the importance of equipping graduates with entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and digital literacy to prepare them for the challenges and opportunities beyond university.

He further highlighted the crucial role of school counsellors in guiding upper secondary students to explore their interests, make informed decisions about tertiary education, and consider courses that match their strengths and aspirations.

YB Dato Sri also encouraged SDGA to explore research and sustainability initiatives, referencing an ongoing project proposal by Dr Florianna Lendai.

SDGA remains committed to supporting the ministry’s focus on STEM and practical skills development, and looks forward to future collaborations that will inspire, equip, and uplift communities across Sarawak.
